Graduate of London’s Central St Martins School of Art and Design, Hussein Chalayan's degree collection was bought by British iconic boutique Browns, launching him and his label, which then opened in 1994, as a significant new fashion force. Chalayan was named British Designer of the Year in 1999 and in 2000.
Chalayan has been the Creative Director of Asprey and of TSE New York. In February 2008 he was appointed Creative Director of Puma. In 2006, Chalayan was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honour’s list.
The Chalayan Black collection is regularly featured in top fashion magazines and international press as well as carried in the world’s best boutiques. Heralded as one of the best of his generation of British designers, his cross-disciplinary work and fashion designs have been the subject of many gallery and museum exhibitions and books including solo museum shows and his self-titled monograph recently published with Rizzoli. The edgy, minimalist aesthetic of the label is favoured by actresses, musicians, artists and tastemakers on and off the red carpet and stage.
